File This In The “Duh” Department

Shocking results from a new study:

Today’s college students are more narcissistic and self-centered than their predecessors, according to a comprehensive new study by five psychologists who worry that the trend could be harmful to personal relationships and American society.

Wow. Up next: According to a new study bloggers are more narcissistic and self-centered than non-bloggers.

Anyway, it looks like t.v. can teach kids valuable lessons. Or the movies can anyway.

The solution offered by the study’s authors:

“We need to stop endlessly repeating ‘You’re special’ and having children repeat that back,” said the study’s lead author, Professor Jean Twenge of San Diego State University. “Kids are self-centered enough already.”

My favorite line in The Incredibles:

Helen: Everyone’s special, Dash.

Dash: [muttering] Which is another way of saying no one is.

  1. Saw that one coming when they started handing out trophies to all the kids instead of just the winners. Telling your kid that they’re special is fine and should be encouraged. Letting your kid think he can do no wrong and not realistically exposing them to the possibility of failure is setting them up for disappointment later in life.
