Picture Post

These are from my ride this morning. The last one is this week’s contest pic.

This is near the Southern Museum of Flight:

You’ve never heard of it? Neither had I:

hourly rates

From the Northeastern end of the airport:

hmm, smog, hmm

I wish I could have heard the debate about what to put on this sign. I wonder what the factions were. Maybe one side wanted to go hard core, with something like Predator. Then the other side countered with My Favorite Martian. Then they settled on this:

e.t. says buckle up

Up North of town, Jackson Rd., or something like that:

Turkey Creek Falls:

Turkey Creek Falls

Footbridge over the Creek:

A Bridge Over Turkey Creek

I think this candidate is a woman, so this is not quite as funny as it could be. Nevertheless:

Heh Heh

And finally, this week’s contest picture. The angle makes it difficult. If it was from the other side of the pond towards where this one is taken, you would get it immediately. Remember to e-mail your guess to alablawg@hotmail.com.

  1. Willie Says:

What is the Airport Inn, a building with no windows for pilots to sleep, or to have a few beers?

  2. Wheeler Says:

i have no idea. and there isn’t much more to it than what’s in the picture. but it’s “world famous.”

  3. Dan Says:

It’s a bar. My dad goes there alot. If you’re not a “good ole boy” you probably won’t feel comfortable. By good ole’ boy I mean it helps if you’re over 50, overweight. A lot of facial hair and less teeth would be nice too. A very friendly bunch, though. There’s also a website:

There’s a picture of me on there. I think I’m the only guy that’s obviously under 45.

  4. Mom Says:

Oh,Oh, I know this place!!! It’s the park with the ugly ducks. It’s were we sat on the picnic bench and Ali ate the pop tarts that were supposed to be for the ducks.

  5. Mom Says:

I meant to say “where” – see I got so excited to make a guess I couldn’t even spell!!

  6. wheeler Says:

    – mom

    first, E-MAIL the guess!

second, you are right, but because you don’t know the name, you only get half credit. well, maybe three quarters credit because you guessed correctly from pennsylvania. no, just half, because you did not follow the directions.

    – everyone else

first, E-MAIL your guess to alablawg@hotmail.com

second, “ugly ducks” is a good hint, i’ll put another one up later today.

third, “allie” is my dog, who did indeed eat the snacks that were intended for the ducks, and who also would have eaten the ducks could she have caught any.

  7. Dystopos Says:

    Ugly Ducks.

Also, I think the Airport Inn’s notoriety comes from the story that part of the planning for the Bay of Pigs invasion was discussed among the pilots from the 117th who frequented this dive. Those pilots were recruited by the CIA to train Cuban expatriates for the mission, and eventually took over some flying duties when the Cuban pilots were overextended.

Their lighted sign was recently sold on eBay for about $150.

  8. Dan Says:

wheeler, you’re going to have to disable comments on these posts.

  9. Dystopos Says:

I heard and understood the instructions and elected to ignore them.

  10. Wheeler Says:

dystopos, you rebel. i was going to let it slide, but just for that, you are disqualified. 🙂

also, i disabled your link, so that would be guessers don’t accidentally reveal the answer to themselves.

  11. […] For this week’s contest. If you haven’t guessed it yet, maybe this will help: […]

  12. Mose Says:

In the 60’s & 70’s the Airport Inn served lots of beer to 1. Air Guard pilots, & 2. rednecks, some fit both categories. Mr. Saddlewhite also made BBQ which would give a cast iron stomach heartburn. Miss Rose was the waitress & she was old then. No air conditioning, screen door, country music on the jukebox. I was in the 106th TRS from ’62-’72 & had lots of beer there. I’m shocked that it’s still there, will go for a beer next time I’m in B’ham.

  13. Wheeler Says:

    that is awesome.

  14. […] First, the results from last week’s contest, which require some explanation. The rules clearly state that answers should be submitted via e-mail. Nevertheless, the first two people with the correct answer – Dystopos and my Mom – both submitted their answers in the comments. I’ll give Mom partial credit, because I think her mistake was due to excitability. Dystopos, on the other hand, admitted in his comment that he knowingly broke the rules. So he gets no credit, even though he was the first to get it and know the name of the location. Mom will share the victor’s crown with Duke, who sent me an e-mail correctly identifying the picture as Avondale Park. […]
