A True Public Servant

Nothing warms my heart like elected officials who truly put the people first. Folks who are willing to sacrifice their own interests for the good of all. They are representatives who who truly love their state. They set an example for all of us to follow as we seek to make this state the best state it can be.

In other words, officials with much more class than that exhibited by the state senator involved in this dispute:

Montevallo officials said they’re worried that lack of cooperation from a state senator could cost them a grant to build a two-mile hiking trail connecting the city’s two big parks.

Sen. Rodger Smitherman, D-Birmingham, counters that the city’s plan to run a trail across Montevallo land that constitutes his family’s home place could cost him dearly in the land’s marketability down the road. . . .

The city has obtained the easements and rights of way it needs in other spots, according to City Clerk Carey Thompson, for the trail to wind its way along Shoal Creek through Orr Park and behind residences on Shelby Street. . . .

Thompson said the city has had a problem getting an answer from Smitherman. Letters sent to him have been returned as undeliverable, Thompson said, and city officials have been unable to reach him by telephone.

Way to go Senator.
