Compare And Contrast
The Tuscaloosa News has an editiorial today about the 7th District's congressional representative – Artur Davis. The essential part:
U.S. Rep. Artur Davis’ decision to break with his colleagues in the Congressional Black Caucus and vote to remove Rep. William Jefferson, D-La., from the Ways and Means Committee is a welcome change from Alabama’s tradition of racial politics.
Davis, a Democrat from Birmingham, voted with the majority of House members on Friday to remove Jefferson, who has been implicated in a bribery/sscandal [sic].
Jefferson claimed he was being singled out because of his race after the FBI raided his Capitol Hill office and a search of his home netted $90,000 in cash tucked away in his freezer. . . .
Davis, however, showed he is more interested in ethics and justice.
“If there is significant evidence you’ve been involved in criminal activity and you misused your office, you stand to be denied privileges in the House," he said. “These are not just rumors or innuendoes about Bill Jefferson."
Now here is the 6th district's Spencer Bachus on Tom DeLay, who has been indicted and therefore by definition faces "significant evidence" of criminal activity:
Until this politically inspired shenanigan subsides, Congressman Delay should be accorded the same presumption of innocence as all other Americans.
Don't forget this, either:
Under House rules, donors may contribute a maximum of $5,000 per calendar year to a legal defense fund, and contributions can be made by individuals, political action committees (PACs), and corporate and union treasuries.
But Rep. Spencer Bachus (R-Ala.) found a way to circumvent the House rules, according to the Public Citizen analysis. He made one $5,000 contribution through his leadership PAC and a second from his campaign fund. That $10,000 total contribution makes Bachus the largest congressional contributor to DeLay’s legal defense in the last three months.

I’m super-excited because when I move in August, I will go from Bachus’ district to Davis’. This is good news, and reason to move.

Why the heck will the Dems not even bother to run somebody against Bachus? They’ll never get that seat if they won’t even try,

Now I’m a pretty big fan of Artur Davis, I’ve voted for him every time I could. But, his decision to vote to remove Jefferson from the Ways and Means Committee was not because “he is more interested in ethics and justice.” Now that Jefferson is gone, Davis has a really good shot at getting on the Ways and Means Committee. I think it’s great Davis voted for Jefferson to get the boot, but realistically, I believe it was for slightly more selfish reasons than his interest in ethics and justice.
