Just Like Old Times

As I listened to an NPR story about Mississippi’s efforts to re-open the Emmitt Till case, I thought, well, justice may never prevail in that case, but at least those days are over. Then I read today’s news. From the Montgomery Advertiser:

A Ku Klux Klan group led an anti-immigration march in Russellville on Saturday. . . . Ray Larsen, imperial wizard of the National Knights of the Ku Klux Klan from South Bend, Ind., told the crowd on a megaphone that illegal immigrants are in America to take all the jobs and they want everyone out of America. “And I’m talking about blacks and whites,” Larsen said. “They want you out of here because they want this as their land.”

Afterward, Klansmen went to a field near Vina in western Franklin County and burned a kerosene-soaked 22-foot-high cross in a field.

And that reminded me that just like George Wallace, we have political candidates – the Moore-ons – who vow to fight for our state government’s right to ignore the constitution.

Finally, there is Larry Darby, Democratic candidate for AG:

Darby said he has been criticized for his views on the mass murder of Jews during World War II, but that he stands by those who deny the Holocaust, in which as many as six million Jews were killed by the Nazis. “I think it was only 40,000 to 70,000, tops,” he said.

Darby also said he did not believe the Supreme Court had the authority to order desegregation in the 1950s. “The federal government does not have the right to get involved in state schools, period,” he said. “I have become racially aware in the last few years in my learning and I think most black people would want to be segregated in their own communities and in their own schools,” he said. “Plus, it makes sense.”

Our unofficial state motto has always been “Thank God for Mississippi.” Could Mississippi’s motto soon be “Thank God for Alabama?”
